Weekending Travel | Newburyport

Happy Tuesday friends! Something about starting the week off on a Tuesday has me recharged and refreshed for the short week ahead! Rather than share all of the weekends happenings I thought I’d focus on our day trip to Newburyport and what to do should you happen upon this coastal New England town! Earlier in May I made a list of Summer trips to take around New England and somehow didn’t put Newburyport on the list – even though it’s on the same commuter line as Rockport – so we’ll still call it a step in the right direction!

Thinking of travel for the long weekend, we didn’t want to go too far and we didn’t want to rent a car because of all the traffic that comes with the holiday, so we looked at the commuter train schedule and picked Newburyport – a short one hour train ride from the city! Why we haven’t taken advantage of all the sites we could see using the commuter trains, I don’t know, but I do know that we will be making plenty of trips in the coming months! You also don’t need a car while in Newburyport because the MVRTA (bus service) has a shuttle that runs from the train station to downtown – so you’re ready to explore! Taking the train down at 9:30 gave us plenty of time to enjoy what turned out to be the most beautiful (and hot) day of the weekend!

Newburyport is the birthplace of the US Coast Guard and when you walk around the boardwalk you can see this everywhere! The beauty of this coastal town is in it’s rich history and walking through the town you can see the similarities between Boston’s oldest streets and the town which has managed to keep all it’s charm.

The main shopping areas were on Pleasant & State Streets with cute shops side by side – I showed great restraint not buying anything!

We walked over to the “boardwalk” where it felt like people would pull up their beach chairs, sit and relax all day! Tall ships often get docked for people to tour and for 5 days El Galeon’s replica was in the harbor.

I was surprised with how many parks surrounded Newburyport – whenever we needed a break from walking or the heat, we’d find a bench and park it. I loved not having a set plan for our day – we really took advantage of relaxing and watching the calmness of the water.

As much as relaxing is great, a girls got to eat so we went to the highly recommended Black Cow Tap & Grill

Since it was so hot out I couldn’t imagine eating a heavy meal, the Spinach & Strawberry salad was so light and fresh – I cleared the plate! Something about that yogurt dressing made it incredible! I’ll admit Gary’s chicken Parmesan sandwich looked great too…but I’m trying to figure out how to recreate that salad!

After lunch we had a few hours to explore before our train so we headed back to the boardwalk to see what kind of harbor tours they offered – lucky for us there was an hour harbor tour leaving right then! For $19 each we took in the gorgeous day! It felt about 10 degrees cooler out on the water and it was money well spent! Yankee Clipper Tours did a great job with equal parts history and letting us enjoy the sights.

That’s a little sea lion peeking through!

Oldies Marketplace is a huge antique market and while I’m not an antique person per se, I can certainly appreciate some of the interesting pieces found here. The old carriage with to scale stuffed dalmatian’s was the most interesting piece, actually no, I think the award for weirdest thing was a cow that was also a lamp!

We couldn’t leave Newburyport without having some delicious gelato (in our case sorbet) from Dolce Freddo Gelato

We went into Newburyport sort of blind if you will – we had a few restaurant recommendations, but aside from that we were left to wander and explore. We shopped, ate & enjoyed the scenery – we couldn’t have asked for a better day and the best part was not having to do any driving! What adventures did you get up to this weekend?

It looks like you guys had so much fun! I was just talking to my husband yesterday about taking the train to Washington this summer and do some fun things around there. He's never seen The Mall or White House, so I think I'll have to make it a must. Perhaps we can even find a train that can take us out to Boston for the day, too, because I'm not about long car rides and dealing with traffic #nopatience! I love towns and villages like this, that maintain that old charm and you kind of feel like you're back in time. I think it's great for the mind too, to disconnect from the now and kind of live in the past through these little trips. Old St. Augustine in Florida is very much like this! Thanks so much for sharing, beautiful, I always look forward to your weekend recaps. Well, honestly, all of your posts, haha! I really do hope that this week feels short because I'm ready for the weekend again, haha!
