Packing List for Iceland

Our trip to Iceland is coming up so fast and of course I've already started to think about what I'll be bringing. This is probably one of the hardest trips I've ever had to pack for because I've heard the weather can change in an instant - from rain to snow to sunshine - albeit cold sunshine, you basically have to be ready for anything. Looking at the average temps in late October I do think we'll be in the clear for snow, but it will be chilly enough that a thicker coat will be needed! I'm only planning on taking my small carry on luggage with me (this is the set I have from Amazon - 3 pieces for $139!). After seeing so many people rave about packing cubes, I finally bought some and I can't wait to use them on this trip!

  • Surprisingly the first thing going into the suitcase is a one piece bathing suit for the Blue Lagoon! This is the first stop upon landing in Iceland!
  • As much as I want to bring a cute wide brimmed wool hat with me, it's not necessarily the easiest to transport and probably not the most practical in Iceland. Packing a cute pom pom hat takes up way less space! I'm debating on whether I want to bring a big blanket scarf that I could also wear as a cape if needed or a smaller scarf - maybe I'll bring both because they don't take up that much space!
  • I really only want to bring one coat that could stand up against most of the weather we could see - so I think a packable down coat might be the best option! I'm also in need of a new winter coat so this is a win/win purchase!
  • Long sleeve tops are perfect for wearing on their own or layering with sweaters & vests. I'll bring one pair of dark denim jeans that I know I'll end up wearing the entire trip! Old Navy jeans are some of my favorites because the fit is so comfortable and you get great quality for under $40!
  • The just in case items in my suitcase include thermal wool socks, waterproof boots, tech gloves & light weight sneakers
The good news about any new items that I might purchase is that they would still work for our New England winter so I'm not just purchasing something to never wear again! I'm sure I'm missing about a dozen things, so any ideas welcome! What would you pack for a trip to Iceland?

  10. The packing cubes are my favorite thing I have bought for travel besides the charger you recommended. That bathing suit is so cute and so lagoon perfect and I LOVE those boots! I'm so excited for you guys and your awesome trip!

  11. Ah y'all are going to have the best time!! Those Sorel boots look perfect for the trip!

  12. You are going to have so much fun, Sorels are totally the smartest thing to pack. We did a stop over in Iceland and it was gorgeous. The only draw back is it is pricy, you don't even want to know how much we spent on food in the airport due to a quick layover. I've heard so many good things about the blue lagoon!

  18. How exciting!!! Packing cubes are the best, they really make a difference. You will have so much fun!!! I think you have a great handle on what to bring. I do have one piece of advice, wear the boots on the plane as they take up so much room in a suitcase. You can always take them off on the plane and put little slipper shoes on (like those ones from primark). I always travel with a little pair of.

  19. SO exciting! Iceland has been on my radar the past few years, and friends that have gone have raved about it. I love that your bathing suit is the first item on the list, because my biggest dream is to enjoy the hot spring lagoons there. Absolutely gorgeous! Can't wait to instastalk your vacay pics <3

  23. You're going to love packing cubes! They really do save you so much space in your luggage! And I swear weather that can change quickly is the hardest part about packing, but at least you'll be able to wear all of your warm clothes at home too!

  39. How fun you guys are going to Iceland! Definitely a tricky destination to pack for...I would not even know where to begin with the up and down temps. You have all the essentials on the list but the over-packer in me would have a hard time summing it down. ENJOY and can't wait to hear all the details about your time in Iceland! xo Emily @ Martinis & Bikinis
