Surviving a New England Winter | Southern Girl Style

Ladies – I got slapped with what the term “winter” really meant the year after I moved to Boston. It’s not just cold up here in New England, it’s Faahhhrrrreeezzzinnngg!!! My idea of winter before Boston was maybe a sweater with jeans, but layering, I mean I didn’t even know what that meant!!

Before diving (appropriate word here) into my winter wardrobe essentials, I thought it would be important (neh entertaining) to explain why these items – more specifically one item are on my MUST have list.

Strike #1 ~ After a particularly blistering week of cold, my boyfriend (now husband) and I went to my sister’s house to celebrate Christmas with the family. While getting out of the car and having arms full of presents – My legs flew from under me and I was flat out on my back…why you may ask, black ice and a poor choice in footwear! Ok, so you’re thinking “one slip on the ground does not make anyone afraid to walk…” well it gets better.

Strike #2 ~ The following week, my cousin and his girlfriend were coming to Boston to celebrate New Years with us. After carefully explaining to them to be careful walking, I myself turn around only to find myself smack dab on the ground again! Only this time it was worse, much worse, I landed on the curb and my head bounced off the sidewalk. By some miracle, I was left with only a nice shiner (only to be covered up with pounds of make-up for the festivities), but I could see that my shoe choice in the winter was starting to be a problem.

Strike #3~ Three days following the New Year year, I walked out of my hubby-to-be’s apartment and started literally skiing down his street?! I screamed until finally the ice had turned into real sidewalk again and I was able to get my footing! Apparently, he had enough and we bought my #1 winter essential that same day!

Without further adieu – my winter survival guide from one southern girl turned northern pro!

These pretties are what keep me upright now-a-days!! I am forced to walk a little funny, but knowing that I won’t be flat out on my face anymore is worth it!! They are waterproof, snow proof and all but ice proof. In my book that equals WINNING!! And by #1 winter essential!

If forced to wear large items of clothing – you better believe they are at least going to be stylish!! This coathas been with me for 3 years and I love it!! It keeps me warm without looking to bulky and it’s actually cute! Mine is in black so it matches everything!

This hat and these gloves complete the look. I have been eyeing this ear warmer for those occasions when I do my hair and want to keep warm as well.

My scarf was a gift from my sister upon moving to Boston. This is a similar style and I like to change it up between a wool scarf and a lighter animal print one that I purchased from Old Navy a few seasons ago.

So there you have it – my winter essentials! I have had the majority of these items for more than three years and since I wear them every single day during the colder months, to me it justifies spending a little more for great quality!

What are your winter essentials?!

Thanks so much for reading!
