Save or Splurge

I got the idea for this post from Liz and then when Christina did her version I basically knew I had to join in on the fun!! I like to think of myself as quite the saver with only a few things I will always splurge on!! Below are the categories and feel free to join in on the fun!

1// A cocktail dress to wear to a wedding

2. A glass of wine at a restaurant

3// A hotel room

4// A haircut

5// Wild card…you name it!

1// SAVE! I think this post pretty much sums up my thoughts on saving for a cocktail dress! I have so many great dresses that are from TJ Maxx and Marshalls!! These are always my go-to’s for weddings and even though I think I’ll stray and splurge on a cocktail dress, I just remember that I have about 10 in my closet that are worthy of being worn!

2// SAVE!! I am not a wine connoisseur by any means, so for that reason I always save and get the second cheapest glass of wine on the menu…why not the first cheapest? Well I figure the second one has to be slightly better!

Relax is my favorite brand of Riesling so I always stock up when we go to Wegmans

3// SAVE / SPLURGE!! I personally like to stay in nicer hotels when we’re on vacation, but I’ll research and do my homework on getting the best price! We stayed a two really great hotels for our trip this summer and I was able to find both through deal sites!

4//SPLURGE!! And by splurge I mean find a Grouponor Gilt Citydeal for a great salon!! I get my haircut only a few times a year and since I don’t color it I feel like I can splurge on getting a great cut with a little gloss added into the service. When I say splurge I mean no more than $50!!

5// My wild card is purses and this will always be a splurge for me!! I have a few designer bags in my closet and the use I get out of them far outweighs the cost of them. I wear my Neverfull LV bag every day to work and have for the last 4 years…that right there is return on investment! I’d much rather spend more on a purse than on clothes and shoes…it’s just my thing!

I’d love to know where you like to save and what’s worth the splurge for you!

P.S. Happy Veteran’s Day to all the men and women who have served our country and continue to serve to protect our well being!!

xo,

I'm the same way on most of these! Occasionally I'll splurge on a glass of wine but I will ALWAYS splurge on a bag! And I agree about the hotel room, definitely worth finding the great deal on the splurge! What a fun little post… I might have to steal this from you! πŸ™‚

Come to Utah to get your hair done… my salon charges $20 for a haircut ($30) with a style. That's seriously the average going rate. (I live in the wrong state for doing hair, HA!) Just think, all the money you would be saving on haircuts would totally pay for your flight πŸ˜‰ HA!
I finally understand why people splurge on bags! I never could understand why women would spend so much money on purses until this last year! I've indulged a couple times and I'm never going back!! (Probably because I won't ever buy another bag now πŸ˜‰ ha ha!)

I think that splurging on a bag and shoes are fine. I say this because I believe in having a high quality bag that will last a long time, and also in comfortable shoes. And if comfortable shoes are more expensive, I'm getting them. Chris is really particular about hotels so he is the decider on that. He is also the trip planner haha. I cut and color my hair like once a year. I usually go for the cheapest or second cheapest red wine at a restaurant too. We also never go above $20 dollars when buying a bottle of wine at the store. I hope that you're having a great day so far!!! πŸ™‚

What fun post πŸ™‚ I'm with you on the dress and wine! I wish I could on a hotel room but I've never really splurged on that. I should though! At least for a special occasion. I recently got my first designer purse and I love it! Totally worth the money and it wasn't as expensive as most!

  15. Kate at Green Fashionista
    November 11, 2014 / 1:46 pm

I'll pretty much co-sign this… I love my under $10 bottles of wine (that honestly don't taste different from the much more expensive wines I've tried at fancy events or rich relatives' homes), but H and I have tried to skimp out on hotel rooms before and have learned the hard way. We have decided it's not worth it to cheap out on vacation, but like you we always research the best deal and I can't stress enough how important it is to read trip adviser and cruise critic before booking a trip.

My splurge is also on my hair and on accessories. I would much rather buy my clothes from F21, Target, and the Gap and splurge on accessories that are worn almost daily.

I keep hearing about this "Rent the Runway" website. Do you recommend it? I read the post that you had a link to regarding Rent the Runway. How long do you rent the dress for? What if it doesn't fit? What if you do something to the dress? You are just like me when it comes to wines at restaurants! There is a huge markup on wines at restaurants so I always go for the second cheapest glass. I will forever plurge on purses, they are my total weakness.

I agree with your points, lady. Except, I splurge on hair because mine is so fine and the original color is kind of a lifeless brown. I don't splurge on clothing often, so feel okay paying extra for my hair. I mean, I wear my hair everyday, so its' worth it right.

Love this idea! And I'm with you on so much…except the haircut & the handbags. I color my hair so the $$ goes there and the cut is second thought unfortunately. However an inexpensive glass of wine can be delish as can finding a great dress at Marshall's! And as far as hotels I'm always on both sides – I love staying in a nice place but hate spending a ton that could be used on the sights and shopping but that is exactly why sites like Jetsetter etc are so amazing!

I love this idea! I have a really big problem with buying glasses of wine at restaurants. I typically (I know, awful) stick with pretty cheap wines on the regular (I just like them) so when a glass of wine is twice as much as I spend on a bottle, I cringe a little hah!

Cannot agree with you more!! I don't like spending a ton of money on cocktail dresses – like you said, there are several stores that offer very great options. I also like Rent the Runway. Their website is so easy to navigate. Also, they send two different sizes of the same dress to make sure that it fits and they have some very affordable options (i.e., $30 rentals). I haven't splurged on a haircut ever. But I have been told that getting a $120 haircut will change my life – will report back if I spend that much money and I have a life changing experience πŸ˜€
