Book Review | Luckiest Girl Alive

If you’ve seen any “Must Read Summer Book ListLuckiest Girl Alive is probably #1 on that list! Having just finished the book I can see why! I was first drawn to read it because I saw that Reese Witherspoon is producing the movie adaptation and I always feel that if they are planning to make a movie it has to be more than decent! It might seem like Jessica Knoll, the author, was an overnight success, but having read her story and how she positioned her career in such a way to get this book to be the success that it is, makes me a huge fan! So onto the book review!!

I tore through 3/4 of this book like it was nothing – I was hooked from page one and kept wanting to read; What was going to happen? Why was Ani the “luckiest girl alive”? What happened to her that made her who she is? I was hooked and then I read why she was the way she was and it took me a little bit to regain composure to read again- I actually put it down for the weekend because I felt like I needed space from it to process what had just happened.

“[Ani FaNelli is] a cross between Sex and the City’s Carrie Bradshaw and Gone Girl’s Amy Dunne. . . . Knoll’s debut truly delivers and will keep readers engaged until the end.”—Library Journal

A lot of people compared it to Gone Girl, but it wasn’t nearly as dark as that novel – this has a lot of twists and turns without being crazy, like it could happen…maybe even has happened, but with Gone Girl I felt it was too far fetched (still loved the book though)!! I love that she had references to things that we all know about and probably even do in our daily lives, like taking pure barre classes and I can guarantee the thoughts that go through her head while she’s tucking aren’t nearly as crazy as ours – at least I hope they aren’t!

“The perfect kind of summer read: Nail-bitingly addictive, equal parts funny and twisted, and full of ‘I never saw THAT coming’ moments.”—Glamour

Writing a book review is hard because you don’t want to spoil anything which is why I’m being purposely vague. Sometimes you like a book because you can relate to the main character in some way and I think on the surface we all are a bit like Ani, perhaps maybe even masking some of our true selves so that others like us even more.

I could not recommend this book more – it was a fast favorite for me and I’m a notorious “chick lit” fan. I’m so happy that I’ve branched out of my comfort zone and next up on my reading list is The Silent Wife

Have you read Luckiest Girl Alive? What’s your must read Summer book?

P.S. I’ve already knocked off 3 of the 5 books on my Summer Reading List

I can't decide if I want to read this one or not! I love the author's writing (she had a great fictional blog for years) but I feel like my expectations might be too high. I'll probably end up reading it though! Glad you enjoyed it!

All five books already? Impressive. Glad you enjoyed this one so much – I love it when a book is good from the first page instead of having to give it a few chapters before really getting into it.

Oooooo! I was just thinking last night about trying to find something interesting enough to keep my attention and focus (I totally drop the ball when it comes to reading if I'm not constantly entertained by a book, Lol). This definitely sounds like it might do the job.

I'm so glad you loved this book as much as I did! Knoll's writing style hooked me from the very beginning. Lots of ups and downs (trying to be vague, like you :), but I really loved it. I also just read the Cosmo article on Knoll's career path– she's an inspiration for sure! Pocket-ing that article for the future. Thanks for sharing, Biana!
