Back in the USA | Do’s & Dont’s to surviving a 14 hour plane ride

Happy Wednesday friends!! It is so good to be back home and getting back into the swing of things!! While vacations are fun – home is home! We made our way back from Dubai yesterday and I’m quickly readjusting to being back again!! While I’ll have the recaps from our trip up soon (one tomorrow), I wanted to share a few Do’s and Dont’s for surviving a 14 hour plane ride!

Passport Holder

Do wear comfortable clothes. This might seem like a no-brainer, but I cant tell you how many people I saw in really heavy clothes. It makes sitting for that long of a time period just unbearable!

Do wear easy slip on shoes. Along the same lines, going through security you’ll have to take your shoes off and you’ll want to do the same on the plane. The espadrilles I purchased before my trip were amazing!! Not only were they light, but they were incredibly comfortable and withstood multiple 17,000 step days!! Don’t forget your socks in case your feet get cold!

Don’t forget the Evian spray. I’ve said it before and Ill say it again, evian facial mist is the best thing ever!! Not only does it give you the little jolt you need to either stay awake or freshen up before landing, but it’s perfect for extremely hot destinations! Once you land indulge in a quick sheet mask to re-hydrate your skin. I used this one and it worked like a charm!

Do purchase noise cancelling headphones. There will be babies, there will be loud people, there will just plain be a lot of noise. I’m so glad I purchased these headphonesbefore our trip – they totally cancelled out all the noises when I went to sleep!

Do watch the free entertainment. We flew Emirate Airlines for all the legs of this trips and they are a superb airline – although their carry-on policy is worse than most domestic carriers, but we made do. With over 1200 entertainment options, including lots of new movies, it made the 14 hours go by a bit faster, even if we didn’t have the luxurious first class cabins. If there was a movie that we both wanted to see, we’d start it at the same time and watch together. For all the chick flick movies he didn’t want to see, I was able to freely watch! Here’s a PSA – skip Before we Go & It’s already tomorrow in Hong Kong – terrible!

iPad Case

Don’t forget plenty of reading material. Before I left I mentioned the Texture app and it was awesome! I downloaded about 10 different magazines to have on my iPad and once they are on your device downloaded you don’t need wifi to read them. Along the same lines, I had about 4 books downloaded and was able to get through Me Before You on the plane! Loved it and can’t wait for the movie!

Do bring your own snacks. Even though we were served two meals on each of the 14 hour flights, we got hungry in between and it was all the little snacks we packed that saved us!

Don’t forget to stand as often as possible. Sitting down for such long periods is hard not only on your butt, but your back too! Wiggle those feet and stretch as much as possible!

Chances are if you’re flying for that long of a period of time, you’re flying internationally so don’t forget a pen to fill out your customs forms!

So those are a just a few of my do’s and dont’s – what are some of yours?

Don't drink too much wine pre-flight 🙂 You will wake up mid-way through and feeling a little hungover on the plane when you know there is no end in sight is really not fun! Not speaking from experience or anything….

Welcome home! I can't wait to hear about your trip! Long flights like this are really rough but these are all great suggestions! If I had to add anything, I would say a good pair of compression socks. I know they sound like old folks but my feet swell really bad anytime I'm in the air that long and the socks help with blood flow!

I'm so excited to read about your experience in Dubai! I've seen a lot of pics and it's so beautiful there. This post was incredibly helpful for me because I've never flown for that many hours before, so now I know what to do to help make the time that more manageable! I need to get a pair of good slip ons because it can be so annoying taking sneakers on and off. I also liked the you mentioned a pen for the forms because the first time we flew internationally, we didn't have one! Such a helpful post and I look forward to tomorrow's! Have a wonderful day, beautiful, and thanks again for sharing!

I totally agree with you about noise cancelling headphones… my hubs and I each have a top of the line pair that we use for flights because people are so loud!! Also, standing up a lot – amen! I hate sitting for long periods of time. The longest flight I was ever on was 11 hours and it was rough! I think I stood up at least once an hour… I'm sure the other passengers were probably about ready to kill me! Haha.

Welcome home!!! Thanks for the tips! The longest flight I was ever on was 9 hrs (to Hawaii) and I thought I would lose my mind! The snacks are a great tip, the boxes you can purchase on the plane are pricey. Another important note about being sure to stand, you could get a blood clot in your leg if you don't! I would also bring extra bottles of water to drink because the airlines only give out those tiny bottles. catchatwithcarenandcody

seriously, the clothes one is so spot on! i remember my first international flight, i wore jeans. never again! so uncomfortable. like, i want to look cute as well, but some of the outfits i see people wearing just blow my mind. actually, my first flight was with emirates, the only time i have flown with them. i don't remember anything with their carry on policy because i used a huge duffel bag (brought all 7 HP books, that was smart) and had no issues. However, that was.. well… a few years ago 😐 i really need to try the facial mist!
