Travel Guide | Eating Your Way Through Portland Maine

Happy Monday, friends! We are coming off such a fun weekend getaway with our friends + babies! When the summer started, we talked about taking a quick trip somewhere and all decided that Portland, Maine was the place to go! It’s a little under two hours from Boston and basically a foodies paradise! We had only visited once before for a quick day trip and a lot of day drinking, which Portland is also known for! Linda is the true MVP of this trip because she researched and planned out all the food stops! We found this incredible Airbnb downtown with parking, a ton of space for everyone and basically what I want my house to look like! Sophia loved the morning views outside! It was pretty central to everything and most places took between 5-30 minutes to walk to! We also really lucked out with the weather, so the weekend was made even better by that!

Now onto the food! There is no shortage of great restaurants and fun cuisine to try out! You almost want an extra long weekend to #eatallthefood, but two days is also plenty! We ate all our dinners at 5 pm as you do with kids, but it helped getting into restaurants and we didn’t feel like we were disruptive to any other diners!

Our first stop was Duckfat for lunch! They don’t take reservations and it’s a pretty small restaurant but worth the wait if you have time! We split some of their famous duck poutine, fries and a panini. It didn’t look like they would be able to accommodate two kids, but they have lobster chairs and we all dined together!

Mid afternoon coffee break! We popped into Tandem Coffee – the scones are a must!

For dinner the first night we went to Union Restaurant located within the Press hotel. Walking in you definitely don’t think it would be a family friendly restaurant but it was anything but! They were prepared with activity boxes for both girls to keep them occupied and the food was so good! The charcuterie board had a great array of cheeses. Gary and I split the butternut squash and goat cheese bisque along with the truffled pot roast- holy yum!! It was so good and I would highly recommend going!!

Holy donut is basically a must visit stop in Portland! There are three locations and well worth the calories of a donut, even though these are potato donuts so you can feel a little less guilty eating them!

For lunch on Saturday we all wanted seafood and the Highroller Lobster Co. was the perfect spot. You order at the counter, choosing the sauces was half the fun and your food is brought to the table. We got both a lobster and crab roll, but have to say that the lobster roll was way better in my opinion!

Another afternoon coffee pick me up at Bard Coffee followed by a few hours of strolling and shopping.

I loved all local shops and picked up some random tidbits from a store called Little and Blanche & Mimi! We walked around Old Port, stopped into some stores and enjoyed some handmade ice cream from Mt. Dessert Ice Cream

We walked over 9 miles on Saturday and were famished for dinner at Flood’s which recently opened! The calamari was spicy but delicious and their known for the juicy cheeseburger which we devoured. This was another family friendly, albeit small restaurant. The owners have small kids so they were very accommodating, but we also had the entire restaurant to ourselves dining at 5pm!

That night the guys let us head out for a few hours and we stopped into Bar of Chocolate which had rave reviews! Even though I’m not a fan of martinis, I tried the chocolate martini which they’re known for and was really into it! We can’t hang like we used to, so we called it a night after one drink!

Our final meal was breakfast at Hot Suppa which is another super small restaurant. They don’t take reservations and get busy super fast. We waited about 15 minutes at 7:50 in the morning if that tells you anything. The salmon eggs Benedict were delicious but to be honest I couldn’t fully enjoy myself because of the tight quarters and Sophia just wanting to be held. It was the first time I’ve ever left a restaurant before I was done eating, but such is life with a 13 month old!

If it seems like all we did was eat in Portland, that’s pretty accurate! We had the best time traveling together and are already plotting our next adventure! I’m in need of a serious food detox!

What a fun weekend getaway! I have always wanted to see Portland. When we were doing our tour of New England, we said if we only had an extra day, we would have driven to Maine, too. Looks like you had some delicious food. That's always the best way to enjoy a getaway haha! Happy Monday, Biana!

Maine is so high on my bucket list, especially this time of year! I'd love to take the kids there for fall break one year to get away from the yucky heat here in the south. You took some beautiful pictures!

Well…. all of of this looks delicious but you had me at the chocolate martinis! Portland has been on my list for awhile. Looks like there are plenty of things to enjoy! I can't believe you all walked 9 miles in a single day! I usually reserve that kind of walking for Boston. 😉
