A Day Trip to the White Mountains

There are so many reasons to love fall in New England – one of which is seeing all the beautiful colors of the season. On Monday, Gary & I took the day off work and went up to New Hampshire to take in all the leaf peeping goodness.

A day trip to the White Mountains

The White Mountains are about 2.5 hours from Boston. I know a lot of people make it a weekend getaway to enjoy more activities, but if you’re short on time – this is a great day trip from Boston. We had talked about doing this drive for years and finally made it happen.

We got to Lincoln, NH around 11:00 and wanted to have an early lunch so that we could focus on the drive and not rush through any of the scenic overlooks. Black Mountain Burger Co. came up as one of the top rated places to eat so we got there right when they opened and dined outside. With COVID restrictions they aren’t allowing as many diners so by the time we left there was quite the line. The burgers were delicious, but the real winner were the buffalo mac-n-cheese balls!

The best way to see the incredible views of the White Mountains is by driving the almost 35 miles of the Kancamagus Highway. Right after lunch we jumped right on to the “pass” and started the drive.

As you make your way around, there are plenty of places to pull off to take in the views. Mountains, rivers, falls & of course beautiful colors – it honestly feels like a picture won’t do these views any justice, but you take it anyway!

Instead of driving back the way we came, we looped all the way around to stop at Omni Mount Washington Resort which also has a scenic overlook. I think one of the things the hotel is most known for is part of the Shining being filmed there – needless to say I would be a little worried about ghosts!

We started our drive at 12:30 and finished around 3:30 and that’s with taking plenty of stops and pictures. If you’re a hiker or camper then I can’t imagine a better adventure for you. You could probably do an entire week camping and exploring the White Mountains, but that is 100% out of my comfort zone and not my idea of fun! What to know before you go? Check out the Foliage Tracker website to make sure they are at their peak!

While I haven’t really made a fall activity list for us, I’m glad we really got the leaf peeping in! Where would you go for some great fall foliage?

What a beautiful place! The leaves are looking so beautiful already!! They haven’t quite started changing here yet… our peak is usually in mid-November since it’s so hot here.

We ate at the Black Mountain Burger Company when we went to Lincoln too. It was delicious! We did make a weekend of it; just my husband and I. We actually found all of the food places to be so yummy. What a great little day trip.

So incredibly beautiful. I want to go there in the Fall! Anywhere in the North East during Fall is just amazing. We do a similar trip to Apple Hill which is 2.5 hours away and we do it in just a day trip too.
